Description
Maruf Black is a pure Afghan landrace indica (broadleaf drug-type hashplant) originating from the Maruf district in Kandahar Province, southern Afghanistan (around 31.57°N latitude, ~1200m elevation).
This region near the Afghan-Pakistan border has a long tradition of cultivating resin-rich cannabis for hashish (locally called chars or charas).
Origins and Genetics: It is a traditional Afghan indica landrace, not a modern hybrid. Growers in Afghanistan have maintained it through open pollination in fields — selecting the best males to pollinate females over many generations, which preserves some natural pheno variation.
The “Black” designation refers to striking pitch-black phenotypes — dark foliage, stems, and calyxes that appear nearly black, especially in certain selections. This trait is prized in Afghan hashplant lines for its visual appeal and association with high resin production. Seed companies and breeders like KropDuster, Indian Landrace Exchange (ILE), ACE Seeds, and others have offered selections (often called Afghan Maruf Black or Maruf Black Selection). KropDuster acquired their version directly from Taden Khan, a noted Afghan landrace seed collector and grower.
Growth Characteristics
- Type: Pure indica / broadleaf Afghan hashplant.
- Structure: Medium-tall plants (typically 2–2.5 meters outdoors; shorter and stockier indoors). Hearty, compact frame with thick, wide leaves and dense buds.
- Flowering Time: 60–70 days indoors (around 10–11 weeks); suited to outdoor or greenhouse grows in suitable climates.
- Yield: Medium, but with very resinous, dense buds that hold up well.
- Resilience: Tough and adapted to harsh outdoor conditions in southern Afghanistan.
It often shows broad, fleshy leaves and a high bract-to-leaf ratio, making it excellent for hash production. Some related “Bald Maruf” variants have minimal leaf structure and spear-like flowers, but the standard Black selections emphasize dark coloration and density.
Aroma, Flavor, and Effects
- Aroma/Bouquet: Strong, pungent, and foul — often described as diesel, solvent, naphthalene (mothballs), paint thinner, rotting meat, burning rubber, sewage, deep funk, or earthy/coffee-like undertones in some phenos. The smell can be intense and “chemical” or musty-dank.
- Effects: Classic heavy indica body stone — deeply calming, relaxing, sedative, and narcotic. Ideal for evening use, pain relief, or winding down; not typically energizing or cerebral.
THC levels are generally mid-to-high for traditional Afghan landraces, with low CBD, delivering a potent, couch-locking experience.
Cultural and Breeding Context: Afghanistan has a rich history of cannabis cultivation, particularly for hand-pressed or sieved hashish in regions like Kandahar. Maruf Black represents preservation efforts to maintain pure landrace genetics amid modernization and geopolitical challenges. Breeders value it for its authenticity, dark visuals, and classic Afghan indica traits (similar to other Kandahar or Hindu Kush lines). Note that “Afghan Black” sometimes colloquially refers more broadly to dark Afghan hash rather than this specific strain.
