Tanao Sri (often spelled Tanaosri or Ta Nao Si) is a historic Thai landrace strain originating from Thailand, specifically linked to the Tanaosri mountain range (also known as Tenasserim Hills) in western Thailand, including areas like Kaeng Krachan National Park near the Myanmar border. It’s a pure sativa landrace, meaning it’s a naturally occurring variety adapted over generations to Thailand’s tropical, humid climate without modern hybridization.
This strain has gained recognition as one of Thailand’s culturally and historically significant varieties. In recent years (around 2022 onward, following Thailand’s decriminalization), the Thai government identified and promoted four key strains as national heritage or approved varieties for cultivation and research, including variants of Tanaosri.

Key Characteristics

Genetics/Type: 100% sativa landrace, pure Thai genetics.
Appearance/Growth: Tall plants with long inter-nodes (spacing between branches), classic Southeast Asian sativa structure. Fast-growing in tropical conditions but very long flowering time (often 140+ days outdoors). Buds can be dense and tightly clustered in some phenotypes.

Aroma/Flavor: Frequently described as citrusy — orange peel mixed with lemongrass, ripe fruit, spicy/woody notes, and sometimes deep incense or herbal undertones.

Effects: As a classic Thai sativa, expect uplifting, cerebral, energetic, and creative highs. Users often report increased focus, sociability, mental stimulation, and motivation — great for daytime use, though the long flowering can produce potent results. Some variants lean more meditative or balanced.

It’s tied to Thailand’s long history of cultivation, some lines have stories of use by groups in remote mountain areas for both cultural and economic reasons.
